Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you became an artist.
When I was young I danced, played the violin, and performed in the theater. My parents loved the arts and they brought me to many author talks, artist studios and craft peoples homes. I started painting around 15 years ago when my friend's grandmother inspired me to be free and just go for it. I have since expanded my art practice to incorporate some of my earlier loves such as sewing and creating with fabric, wool, metal and wood to make functional Marionettes. A wonderful feeling I pursue is to create with partners in the arts. Poets and musicians, young and old appear in my stop motion movies. Yes I have found much reward in a life full of playing and connecting with others.
How has COVID-19 affected your work as an artist?
I was actually in Seattle, WA visiting my daughter (making the painting in the above photo for her apartment) when COVID-19 showed up, I arrived home a few days before Illinois had its stay-at-home order put in place. Seeing the city shut down and become desolate was a memorable experience, I knew then that the way people connected was about to change.
What are you currently working on?
My studio is in my home but I have had to switch gears and think about what art to make during this time. The sweet neighborhood I live, walk, and wander with my family and dog has brought me much comfort and gratitude. It was an easy decision to dedicate my next group of pieces to my surroundings. I am planning on having a walk-by art show where I will hang my paintings up on a string tied between my huge maple trees in my front yard. This way people can safely social distance outside, and go see art and hopefully have a moment of joy.
